WELCOME BACK MATT COSTA

Coming to Australia as a special guest on the Jack Johnson tour, Matt Costa, the 25 year old former skateboarder now one of the most buzzed about emerging artists, will be playing a select number of intimate headlining shows:

March 30 2008 - Enigma Bar, Adelaide, SA

March 31 2008 - Northcote Social Club, Melbourne, VIC

April 2 2008 - Republic Bar, Hobart, TAS

April 4 2008 - The Factory, Sydney, NSW

April 5 2008 - Great Northern, Byron Bay, NSW

April 6 2008 - The Zoo, Brisbane, QLD

Since Matt’s last visit to this part of the world, Matt has been back in the studio recording the follow up to his beautiful, folky, full length debut “Songs We Sing”. Where “Songs…” displayed his gentle artistry and skilful acoustic guitar playing, the new album “Unfamiliar Faces” (out March through Universal), finds Matt Costa wrapping his appealing melodies in increasingly ambitious packages that recall the Shins & Spoon.

Leading with the spunky piano-driven opener “Mr Pitiful” and the country-tinged acoustic “Never Looking Back” to the jangly power-pop of “Emergency Call”, “Unfamiliar Faces” traverses many musical styles resulting in an effortlessly intoxicating musical experience.

Don’t miss Matt Costa live and intimate.

letter from Jack Johnson to his Australian fans

To Whom it May Concern:

My friends and I have just finished recording a new album called Sleep Through the Static. At this point in my life I weigh about 190 lbs and my ear hairs are getting longer. I also have a couple of kids. My wife popped them out, but I helped. Some of the songs on this album are about making babies. Some of the songs are about raising them. Some of the songs are about the world that these children will grow up in; a world of war and love, and hate, and time and space. Some of the songs are about saying goodbye to people I love and will miss.

We recorded the songs onto analog tape machines powered by the sun in Hawaii and Los Angeles. One day, JP Plunier walked into the studio and told us, “It has been 4 to 6 feet and glassy for long enough,” and so we gave him a variety of wind and rain as well as sun and so on. And Robert Carranza helped to put it all in the right places.

After inviting Zach Gill to join Adam Topol, Merlo Podlewski, and myself on our last world tour, we decided to make him an official member of our gang. So our gang now has a piano player, which probably makes us much less intimidating, but Merlo, our bass player, is 6’3” so we are still confident.

All of these songs have been on my mind for a while and it is nice to share them. I am continually grateful to my wife who is typing this letter as I dictate it to her.

Mahalo for listening,

Jack Johnson

JACK JOHNSON TOUR ANNOUNCED!!! March 2008

November 26, 2007

Nik Tischler and Michael Coppel, in conjunction with CH [V], MAX and NOVA radio, are pleased to announce the forthcoming 2008 National Australian tour for JACK JOHNSON. Almost 3 years after JACK performed sold out shows across the country, he returns this coming March with MATT COSTA in support for what promises to be a truly captivating affair.

JACK JOHNSON returns to our shores with a new album under his belt, and a back catalogue of hits spanning his multi-platinum selling albums "Brushfire Fairytales", "On and On", and "In Between Dreams". The shows promise Australian audiences the extraordinary live experience they have come to know and love over the past 8 years, as he performs such classics as "Inaudible Melodies", "Sitting Waiting Wishing", "Flake", "Taylor", "Times Like These” and many more.

As a precursor to the forthcoming tour, the brand new single "If I Had Eyes" is set to be released here on Boxing Day, with the album due to hit stores Feb 2nd 2008. Titled "Sleep Through The Static", JACK’S fourth studio album is yet another hypnotic blend of JACK JOHNSON penned treasures that will enthrall his longtime fans, and capture new ones as JACK and his band mates shake things up a little, cranking electric guitars and adding darker themes to his songs. Recording for the first time outside Hawaii, the forthcoming album is the first to be recorded at L.A.’s Solar Powered Plastic Plant, and is co-produced by JP Plunier who worked with JACK on his first album.

Touring once again with long time band members Adam Topol (drums), Merlo Podlewski (bass) and relative newcomer Zach Gill (keys), Australian fans can look forward to being the first audiences in the world to hear his forthcoming album “Sleep Through the Static” brought to life, as JACK JOHNSON kicks off his world tour here next year.

Main support on the national tour will be Brushfire Records Label mate MATT COSTA. It's COSTA’S sophomore release “Unfamiliar Faces” with its appealing melodies reminiscent of the Shins, Spoon and Ben Folds that sees him return to Australia for his second visit. While the two fellow musicians have toured together several times internationally and collaborated on numerous soundtrack projects, this will be their first time in Australia together.

Picking up the opening slot is local Byron talent WILL CONNER. With a reputation for making music with a pure and unwavering sound, CONNER along with special guest 21st century soul surfer DAVE "RASTA" RASTOVICH, will open proceedings performing tracks from his debut album “Southern Hemisphere”.

In an effort to acknowledge and support the important work that non-profit groups are doing in communities across the planet, JACK JOHNSON’S 2008 world tour is reaching out to groups who are activating positive change in the realms of water quality, community & school gardens, land preservation, environmental education and more. With his World Tour kicking off in Australia JACK has engaged a number of these organizations to be present at the shows to raise awareness of their objectives

With tickets selling out on JACK’S last Australian tour in record time, fans should get in early to avoid missing out on what’s shaping up to be the must see tour of 2008.

Tour dates from Thursday March 13th - Saturday March 29th - click here for details.
Tickets for all shows are on sale Friday December 7th @ 9am

NEW JACK JOHNSON SINGLE COMING SOON!!!

November 22, 2007

Jack Johnson - If I Had EyesThe wait is finally over, this coming Tuesday 27th November - Jack Johnson is set to launch his first track ‘If I Had Eyes’ from his forthcoming 5th album ‘Sleep Through The Static’.

On ‘If I Had Eyes,’ the electric riff gives a sharp edge to lyrics about the sad dissolution of a long-term relationship - ‘If I had eyes in the back of my head/ I would have told you you looked good as you walked away.’

The album was recorded at the Solar Powered Plastic Plant in Los Angeles (the eco-friendly studio Jack had built last year, which runs entirely on solar power), and the Mango Tree in Hawai. It was co produced by Jack Johnson and JP Plunier, the producer from his first album “Brushfire Fairytales”.

Lineup for the record was Jack's longtime band members Adam Topol (drums), Merlo Podlewski (bass) and Zach Gill of ALO (keys) who joined the band as a full time member during their 2005 tour to support “In Between Dreams”.

In the 2 years since the divine “In Between Dreams” album came out, Jack has been spending time with his family, and focusing on the Kokua Hawaii Foundation which he started with his wife that focuses on recycling programs and education in Hawaii's schools.

Since 2005 Jack has also since released the soundtrack to the animated film Curious George and contributed covers of John Lennon's "Imagine" to Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur, and Bob Dylan's "Mama, You've Been On My Mind" to the soundtrack to the Dylan biopic "I'm Not There"

imageDave Rastovich, Hayden Panettiere and Other Real-Life Heroes Make A Daring Pre-dawn Mission Back to Japanese Dolphin Killing Cove.

TOKYO- Less than 24 hours after professional surfer Dave Rastovich led an international group of over 30 surfers, celebrities, and musicians on a peaceful paddle-out ceremony to honor the more than 25,000 dolphins killed each year in Japan, fishermen in the tiny village of Taiji resumed the slaughter that had been delayed by the increased worldwide media attention.

In response, the surfers decided in solidarity to make a pre-dawn return to the killing cove to recreate the ceremony, albeit with fewer people to evade detection. Rastovich and the others paddled within a stone’s throw of a pod of captive pilot whales and their calves that had been herded into the cove for early morning slaughter.

“The reason we surfers were there was to share the blood-stained waters at eye-level with our ocean kin awaiting their execution,” said a dripping, visibly shaken Rastovich just after paddling in. “Despite the fishermen taking great pains to hide their acts of cruelty, we seized an opportunity to bring this travesty to the world’s attention.”

Taiji-area fishermen, who kill dolphins and whales for their meat, netted off the bay and constructed green tarps to shield the slaughter from prying eyes and front-line cetacean activists bent on shutting down the dolphin trade forever. When the surfers learned of the imminent slaughter, they did not hesitate to return despite the distinct possibility of violent resistance and police arrest.

Rastovich and his core team of surfers trailed by camera crews arrived at the infamous Taiji cove to paddle out to the captured pilot whales. After entering the water they quickly arrived alongside the whales who swam back and forth along the edge of the seaward net.

The six paddlers, including Rastovich, his wife mermaid model Hannah Fraser, Heroes TV star Hayden Panettiere, Australian actress Isabel Lucas, author Peter Heller and professional surfer Karina Petroni, formed a traditional surfers’ memorial circle situated between the whales and the blood-ridden shallows.

Local fishermen converged almost immediately, harassing the paddlers with yelled threats and advancing on them with whirling propeller blades. The irate fishermen, who yelled “Why are you here? Go Home!” then used a long wooden pole to attack and intimidate the surfers.

“Even though the fishermen used force to try and break us up we held our peaceful stance. The feeling in the circle was of incredible strength” said mermaid model Hannah Fraser.

With tensions escalating and the police sirens growing, the surfers quickly paddled back to shore where a distraught Hayden Panettiere fell to her knees sobbing, overwhelmed by the carnage she and the group had just witnessed.

“I couldn’t believe how red the water was,” said Panettiere. “The whales were so scared. Hopefully their deaths won’t be in vain.”

After hightailing it out of Taiji, 30 policemen readied with a paddy wagon stopped the three-van convoy at the border of the Wakayama prefecture. After politely checking passports and questioning the group intently, the police waved the crew on their way.

Rastovich expressed extreme sorrow, saying “With many nets and kill boats waiting beyond the cove, the fishermen’s intense desire to kill left no room for escape.”

Reflecting on the day’s experience, a somber Isabel Lucas expressed that the worst part was that the whales are probably all dead by now. “We couldn’t save these whales but hopefully shining the light on their deaths will save others.”

Rogue Wave supports Natalie Portman's Charity

October 31, 2007

imageBrushfire wanted you to be the first to know that Rogue Wave has released an exclusive new track as part of a special iTunes charity mix we put together with Natalie Portman and other artists from the independent music community. The mix, Big Change: Songs for FINCA, will directly benefit microfinance organization FINCA International, which gives loans to people living on less than $2 a day in the developing world so they can start small businesses that will help them lift themselves and their families out of poverty. All net proceeds from the album, which costs $7.99 on iTunes, go to FINCA’s Village Banking programs around the globe.

When Natalie approached us about giving a little bit of our time and creativity, and told us how these small loans can make such a big impact, we didn’t hesitate to get involved. We hope you will feel the same way.

Tell your friends about Big Change: Songs for FINCA, and ask them to spread the word. As little as $50 can be turned into one loan that can impact an entire family. Imagine the impact you can have if you buy the album and ask all of you friends to follow your lead; or make a commitment to give it as a holiday gift with real social impact. This is a powerful way to get involved in the global fight against poverty.

Watch the Village Banking Campaign on MySpace and Facebook to keep up-to-date on the album’s success - and the huge impact we are making together for the world’s poor.
